Buena Vista University will hold its 35th annual Founders Day memorial service on Saturday, August 25th to honor nine deceased individuals who have served the institution as faculty, staff, trustees, alumni, and friends and benefactors.
Founders Day has become an annual memorial service that has honored 185 individuals through 2011. The service… led by university chaplain Reverend Ken Meissner… begins at 11 a-m at Schaller Memorial Chapel.
Those being recognized this year are: Edward Bock of Cedar Rapids, a member of the Board of Trustees who died in March. Barbara Bulman of Apple Valley, Minnesota, a former member of the Board of Trustees, who died in March. Doctor Mac Hornecker of Arkadelphia, Arkansas, a professor of art at Buena Vista from 1971 to 2001, who died last October. Archie Mackay, Junior of Alta, a well-known bagpiper who played at nearly every B-V-U commencement since the early 1980s and led B-V-U freshmen through the Victory Arch on Founders Day at the start of the academic year. He died in April. Doctor Floyd Pace of Alta, a professor of education at Buena Vista from 1969 to 1991, who died last September. V.G. “Bob” Schaffer of Naples, Florida served on the Board of Trustees and died last Ddecember. Estelle Siebens of Lyford Cay, New Providence, Bahamas, was the wife of the late Doctor Harold Walter Siebens. Significant gifts to Buena Vista University from Siebens and his Foundations were a catalyst for transformation of the campus and academic program over the past several decades. She died in March. Wendy Waugaman of Waukee, a member of the Board of Trustees who died in June. Ralph Welch of Storm Lake, a former adjunct professor and director of student field experiences in the School of Education. He died last December.
