A Newell man was killed in a car-semi head-on collision Tuesday morning.
Buena Vista County Sheriff Gary Launderville says the accident occurred about 9:20 three-and-a-half miles east of Newell on highway seven. Sheriff’s deputies, the Newell Fire Department, and Newell Police were dispatched. It was determined a westbound car collided head-on with an eastbound semi. The collision caused both vehicles to leave the roadway.
The driver of the car… 24-year-old Jonathon David Ohrtman of Newell… was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the semi… 32-year-old Robert Bainbridge of Albert City… received minor injuries and was taken by private vehicle for medical treatment.
Launderville says the initial investigation indicates the car crossed the center line into the path of the semi.
During the extraction of Ohrtman, heat became a large issue… with several firefighters needing treatment for heat exhaustion. One Newell firefighter was taken by ambulance to BVRMC for heat exhaustion.
Assisting at the scene were the Newell Police and Fire Departments… Fonda Fire Department… the state patrol… the DOT… Pocahontas County Sheriff’s Department… Newell ambulance… BVRMC paramedics… Fonda ambulance… and the Buena Vista County medical examiner’s office.
