One person was killed in a six-vehicle pileup in a road construction zone on highway 59 about three miles north of Holstein Wednesday afternoon.
The state patrol says five vehicles were stopped on the highway… waiting to be escorted by a pilot car through the one-lane portion of the road work area. A semi driven by 46-year-old Gordon Draskovic of Windsor, Ontario was southbound… failed to stop… and collided into the back of a car driven by 75-year-old Larry Watts of Cherokee. The impact caused a chain reaction of collisions.
Watts was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. The drivers of the other four vehicles were all injured… 52-year-old Shari Shontz of Holstein… 53-year-old Warren Kellogg of Cherokee… 25-year-old Mark Schleef, Junior, of Cherokee… and 56-year-old Bradley Olson of Lytton. All four were taken to the hospital in Cherokee for treatment. The extent of their injuries wasn’t disclosed. The driver of the semi wasn’t injured.
The accident occurred about 4:30 Wednesday afternoon… and remains under investigation. The state patrol was assisted at the scene by the Ida County Sheriff’s Department, Department of Transportation, and Holstein EMS.
