6/27/12 RR Crossing Improvements
State funding has been approved to add gates and signals to a railroad crossing west of Alta.
Buena Vista County Engineer Jon Ites told the Board of Supervisors Tuesday morning the crossing gates and signals are estimated to cost 170-thousand dollars… with the county’s share ten-percent. The crossing is on M-27 south of highway seven, three miles west of Alta. Tuesday morning, the Supervisors approved an agreement between the Iowa Department of Transportation, the county, and the Canadian National Railroad covering the crossing improvements.
Funding for improvements to another railroad crossing in the county hasn’t been approved. Ites says for the past 18 years he’s applied to the DOT for a signalized crossing on M-50 at Sulphur Springs, but that hasn’t been approved. The county did install overhead lights at that crossing to improve safety.
