C-63 and highway 110 west of Storm Lake were closed early Tuesday morning due to a natural gas leak.
Fire chief Mike Jones says the fire department was called shortly after 3:30 a.m. to the intersection of highway 110 and Emerald Drive, where natural gas was leaking from a regulator station. He says natural gas was flowing at an exceedingly high rate from a relief pipe at the regulator station.
C-63 and highway 110 were closed down by law enforcement and fire fighters for about 30 minutes until personnel from Alliant Energy arrived. Alliant staff determined the flow had returned to a normal range after about 20 minutes. Repairs were made to a faulty regulator valve after a small amount of natural gas continued to leak out of the system.
The fire department was on scene for about 30 minutes and was assisted by the Storm Lake Police Department.
