2/21/12 Vestal Street Speed Limit
The Storm Lake city council Monday evening approved on first reading an ordinance raising the speed limit on Vestal Street.
The speed limit has been 35 miles an hour… but now that the roads paved, the county supervisors have received numerous complaints from motorists who feel that speed is too low. The supervisors directed county engineer Jon Ites to conduct a speed study… and Ites determined the road north of the Field of Dreams should be 45. Initially, the city’s traffic safety team disagreed… and wanted it to stay at 35 so they can get traffic date for the next year. That part of Vestal Street is half in the city, half in the county.
Two weeks ago, the city council directed city staff to prepare an ordinance increasing the speed to 45 mph at the crest of the hill north of the Field of Dreams. Under the ordinance, the speed will be 25 mph from Tenth Street north… then go to 35 mph 700 feet north of Tenth… then 45 mph 1,575 feet north of Tenth. The county supervisors will also need to approve the increased speed.
