Beaver Women Miss Out On IIAC Tourney

The season came to an end for the Buena Vista women’s basketball team on Saturday afternoon, as it saw Cornell College go 12-of-26 from downtown en route to a 76-62 victory in a winner-take-all game.

The Rams were blazing from long range from the outset, burying 7-of-18 attempts in the first half alone to build a 23-point lead and take a 40-19 advantage into the break.  Cornell then maintained the advantage in the second half, bumping the margin to as many as 25 with just over seven minutes to play.

BVU scored 13 straight points down the stretch to get back within 12 with 13 seconds left, but the surge was too-little-too-late.

Sophomore Susan Kies (Fonda, Iowa/Newell-Fonda) made two three-pointers and finished 7-of-13 overall from the field to score a team-leading 18 points.  She also dished out four assists and recorded two steals.  Senior Jessica Christensen (Turin, Iowa/West Monona) wrapped up her stellar collegiate career with 13 points and a team-best nine rebounds.  She finished the game going 9-of-9 at the charity stripe, as no other Beaver got to the free-throw line more than four times.  Fellow senior Laura Hilby (Johnston, Iowa/Johnston) was right behind with 10 points and eight rebounds, as senior Amanda Roder (Remsen, Iowa/St. Mary’s) grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.

BVU, which made only five baskets and shot 15 percent from the field in the contest, responded to shoot 38 percent in the second half.
Rikki Mulloy drilled five three-point buckets off the bench to lead all scorers with 29 points for Cornell (9-14, 7-9 IIAC).

Buena Vista wraps up its 2011-12 campaign at 11-14 overall (6-10 IIAC).  Aside from Christensen, Hilby and Roder, the game also concluded the playing careers for Kiara Bogan (Chicago, Ill./Hillcrest) and Crystal Davis (Hamilton, Iowa/Twin Cedars).  Story courtesy of the BVU sports information department.
