Alta Aurelia hung tough against the defending 2A State Champions, before Davis County pushed across a late unearned run as they defeated the Warriors 1-0 in the 1st round of the 2A State Baseball Tournament on Saturday night.
Alta Aurelia pitcher Austin Delp, and Davis County flame thrower Calvin Matthews traded scoreless innings into the 6th. Delp survived a bases loaded, two-out situation by getting a pop-up to end the 3rd. In the 5th inning, with runners on first and third and two outs, Delp got Matthews to pop-up to end that threat. Matthews gave up a one-out double to Jalen Henningsen in the 4th, but got the next two outs to strand Henningsen on second.
In the bottom of the 6th with one out, the Mustangs got a baserunner as Clint Foster reached on an error. After Foster stole second, Delp got a strikeout for the second out of the inning. However, Calvin Utt hit a grounder that went through the legs of Warriors third baseman Neil Marshall, and Foster just beat the throw of Henningsen in left to score the game's only run.
In the top of the 7th, Henningsen led off with an infield single, but was thrown out trying to steal second. Matthews then retired to next two hitters, and Davis County escaped with the win.
Delp pitched a complete game 2 hitter, allowing 1 unearned run, with 2 walks, and 5 strikeouts. Matthews, a University of Iowa recruit, went the distance, allowing 2 hits, both to Henningsen, as those were the only baserunners Matthews allowed, as he had no walks, and struck out 10.
Davis County improves to 42-1.
Alta Aurelia finishes the season 23-11. They graduate 8 seniors, including Jaden Holton, Evan Laursen, Jalen Henningsen, A.J. Lange, Neil Marshall, Austin Delp, James Curbow, and Dylan Harms.
