Threat To Kill Child Leads To Arrest

A Storm Lake man was arrested Wednesday night after police were dispatched to 524 Terrence Street to investigate a domestic disturbance in progress and a person threatening to kill a small child.

Officers took 40-year-old Miguel Martinez Chavez of Storm Lake into custody outside of the residence. The adult female victim told officers Martinez Chavez physically assaulted her while she was holding their one-month-old child. He then threatened to kill the child if the police were called. A witness called 911.

Police further learned about three weeks earlier, the victim and Martinez Chavez were engaged in a verbal argument at the residence at which time Martinez Chavez allegedly threatened to throw their new born child out of a second story window. The small child was checked and appeared to be unharmed.

Martinez Chavez was charged with two counts of child endangerment, two counts of first-degree harassment, both aggravated misdemeanors… domestic assault and public intoxication, both simple misdemeanors. He was booked into the Buena Vista County Jail and held without bond. A report was filed with the Iowa Department of Human Services.
