The Spencer Police Department has issued a warning to the public regarding a recent payroll scam.
Officials say the way the scam works is that the business or organization receives an email from a person whom they believe is an employee. This email states they would like to change their direct deposit to a different account. The scammers provide a voided check with the new account information to the payroll department a day or two before payday. The employee’s email is altered slightly by the scammer to disguise the fraud. The payroll deposit is then made by the employer to the new/altered account and is not discovered until it’s too late and they check has gone into another account.
Officials are reminding employers to be aware of the scam and to verify in person with your employee if such a change to their direct deposit is requested.
