Storm Lake Mayor Mike Porsch is planning “Storm Lake Proud” week next month.
Porsch Thursday afternoon told the Mayor’s Advisory Committee for Park, Trials, and Urban Forest the week is planned for April 29th to May fifth, in conjunction with Buena Vista University’s Beaunification Day on April 30th. Porsch says the week will be for clean up of park and beaches… with the whole community helping clean up on Saturday, May fourth.
The parks department is compiling a list of projects… which will include sweeping sidewalks, cleaning up yards and neighborhoods, downtown flower boxes, and rain gardens.
Porsch says he hopes the list of projects will continue if people want to volunteer… and he would also like to begin an Adopt a Park project. He envisions neighborhoods, civic groups, and churches would volunteer to pickup things in parks and beaches on a regular basis to keep them as clean as possible. Porsch sees it as a good way to get people enthused… and signs would be placed in parks listing who has adopted that park.
A Storm Lake High School ecology class is organizing a project to put trash and recycling bins in parks, beaches and downtown… and Porsch says some of those will be installed during Storm Lake Pride week. City manager Keri Navratil says 30 cans have been budgeted and will be installed after July first.
