Another dominating performance by the Newell-Fonda defense has given them a chance to play for the state championship Saturday night. The Mustangs forced 39 turnovers in their 81-56 win over Marquette Catholic Friday afternoon in their semi-final game vaulting them into the 1A state championship game for the 5th time in the last seven years.
Macy Sievers scored a team high 16 points and had ten steals, six rebounds, and five assists helping the Mustangs improve to 26-0. Megan Morenz scored 12, Emma Stewart had 11, and Olivia Larsen scored 10 and surpassed Renee Maneman as the school’s all time leading scorer now with 1,465 points.
The Mustangs led by three after the first quarter 17-14, they would then break the game open in the 2nd outscoring Marquette Catholic 28-14 in the 2nd quarter to grab a 45-28 lead at the half.

Newell-Fonda will now play West Hancock (25-1) for the 1A state championship Saturday at 7pm. The game will be broadcast on 92.9FM KKIA. The Mustangs lost the championship game in 2013 and 2014 before claiming their only state title in 2015, and they finished runner up again in 2018.
