The girls state basketball tournament is underway in Des Moines and Wednesday the top ranked team in class 1A will take the floor at Wells Fargo Arena. Newell-Fonda will play Springville for the 4th time in the last five state tournament’s when they meet in the quarter-final round at 1:30pm, two of the previous three were state championship games including last year’s 60-49 win by Springville. The Mustangs enter the game as the highest scoring team in class 1A averaging 75 points per game and are the only unbeaten team in the field at 24-0. Chris Boeckman had a chance to visit with Mustangs head coach Dick Jungers.
Coach Jungers, now in his 17th season, has a career record of 363-68. This year’s team is his tenth that he has led to the state tournament and the Mustangs have played in the 1A championship game in four of the last six season’s and the 2015 team won it all when they beat Springville 45-43. This year is the Mustangs 14th overall state tournament appearance and they have finished runner-up six times (1997, 2000, 2008, 2013, 2014, and 2018).
