Alta Aurelia Comes Up Short in Triple OT

In a Class A 1st round playoffs thrill ride, AHSTW prevailed 30-28 over Alta Aurelia in triple overtime in Avoca.

Alta Aurelia built a 14-0 halftime lead.  The Warriors put together a brilliant 21 play, 93 yard drive that chewed up an astounding 11:12.  Logan McCoy’s four yard touchdown run made it 6-0.  On the first play of the ensuing drive, Carson Elston recovered a fumble and returned it 22 yards for a touchdown.  McCoy followed that up with a two point conversion pass to Nick Gaes.

Gabe Pauley got the Vikings on the board late in the 3rd quarter with a seven yard touchdown run, and then Pauley’s 18 yard TD run early in the 4th tied the game at 14-14, which is how it stayed through regulation.

Alta Aurelia scored to start the first overtime on McCoy’s four yard run.  The Warriors then scored a two point conversion on a pass from Michael Ryherd to Gaes.  AHSTW tied it on a four yard run from Pauley, and a two point pass from Blake Osbahr to Drake Partridge.

In the second OT, The Warriors stuffed AHSTW on a 4th down quarterback sneak from the one yard line.  Alta Aurelia could not find the end zone on their possession, and a field goal attempt was missed.

The third overtime started with a two yard touchdown run from Gaes on 3rd down to make it 28-22, but the two point try was unsuccessful.  On the Vikings second play, Pauley scored on a six yard run, and then a two point pass from Osbahr to Brayton Tuma wrapped it up.

Anthony Krier led the Warriors rushing attack with 84 yards.  McCoy passed for 77.  Gaes led the way with 11.5 total tackles and four sacks.

AHSTW survived four turnovers, including three in the 1st half.  Zach Issa picked off a pass in the 4th quarter, and also recovered a fumble, as did Keaton Mork.  Alta Aurelia had three 2nd half turnovers.

Alta Aurelia finishes the season at 7-3.  They will graduate eight seniors.

AHSTW remains unbeaten at 10-0.  They will host Mason City Newman in the quarterfinals next Friday.
