Tornadoes Win Season Opener At Cherokee

Five different Storm Lake players scored touchdowns and the Tornadoes rolled up 295 yards rushing in a season opening 33-13 win at Cherokee Friday night.

Manny Chavez ran the ball 16 times for 88 yards and scored on a six yard touchdown in the first quarter to put Storm Lake ahead 6-0.  Kole Wiegert carried the ball 16 times for 72 yards and scored on a one yard plunge that put the green and white ahead 33-6 with under five minutes to go in the game.

Mark Eddie, who left the game in the 2nd quarter due to a neck injury, threw a 24 yard touchdown pass to Jake Heitman in the 2nd quarter that put Storm Lake ahead 12-0 at the time.  He would finish the game 7 0f 11 for 78 yards.

Heitman relieved Eddie and completed 4 of 7 passes including a 30 yard touchdown to Xeng Vang early in the 4th quarter on a fourth down play.  Also scoring for the Tornadoes was Dawson Miller who rambled for a 20 yard T-D run, and Sebastyan Santellan booted a 22 yard field goal on the final play of the first half to put the Tornadoes up 15-6 at the half.

Storm Lake totaled 438 yards of offense compared to 252 for Cherokee.  Storm Lake scored all 15 of their first half points off of three Braves turnovers.  Mach Nyaw had an interception and Wiegert recovered two fumbles.  The Tornadoes had 18 first downs in the game and the Braves had seven.  Aaron Ungs had three quarterback sacks.

Storm Lake has now won eight of their last nine meetings versus Cherokee and will play again Friday night at home against Alta-Aurelia.
