Van Meter scored the final three runs in their 4-3 win over Alta Aurelia in the opening round of the Class 2A state baseball tournament on Monday afternoon at Principal Park in Des Moines.
Van Meter got on the board in the bottom of the 1st on a sacrifice fly. The Warriors took the lead in the 4th on a two-out, two-RBI single by Anthony Krier. Alta Aurelia added to their lead in the 5th on a two-out RBI triple by Kaleb Sleezer.
The Bulldogs got a run back in their half of the 5th, and then took the lead back in the 6th on the strength of three straight one-out hits.
In the 7th, Alta Aurelia put runners on 2nd and 3rd with one out, but an unsuccessful squeeze play led to the second out of the inning, and a strikeout finished the game.
Van Meter had eight hits in the game, and Alta Aurelia had six. Alex Snyder went the distance for the Warriors, allowing three earned runs, two walks, and three strikeouts. Snyder finishes his career with 267 strikeouts, the most in Alta Aurelia history.
Winning pitcher Anthony Potthoff also pitched a complete game, striking out 11, with one walk and a hit batter.
Alta Aurelia concludes the season with a record of 20-5. Krier, who also had a couple of diving catches in centerfield, got a share of the Wells Ag Supply of Fonda Player of the Game, along with the three seniors, Snyder, Sleezer, and TJ Walter.
Van Meter (30-8) will play top seed Iowa City Regina in the 2A semifinals on Thursday.
