Playing in their first ever state tournament game the Alta-Aurelia Warriors lost to Iowa City-Regina 7-2 in the first round of the class 2A state tournament on Monday.
Playing in front of a partisan Warriors crowd, Alta-Aurelia struck first in the bottom of the first inning when Annika Patton reached on an error and Lily Peterson followed with an RBI double down the left field line and it was 1-0 after the first inning. But Regina would tie the game without a hit in the 3rd inning, take the lead in the 4th on a RBI double by Ellie Gahan and they would put the game away with a four run sixth inning. Each team scored a run in the 7th inning, the Warriors coming on an RBI ground out off the bat of Patton.
Abby Kraemer pitched all seven innings, five of the runs off of her were earned on a total of five hits. She struck out 15 but walked nine.
The Warriors, now 22-4, will play Earlham Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 in the consolations bracket. The game will be broadcast on 92.9FM KKIA.
