In a game where all the runs were scored in the first three and a half innings, Sioux Central rolled to an 11-4 district baseball 1A semifinal win over Newell Fonda Thursday night in Algona.
An RBI groundout by Ben Hargens put Sioux Central on the board in the 1st. The Rebels added three more in the 2nd on a two-RBI single by Caleb Rock, and an RBI single by Caden Webber.
Newell Fonda got a run back in their half on the 2nd, as Austin Gerdes scored after a pair of stolen bases and a bad throw to 3rd base, but Sioux Central busted it open with a six-run 3rd. With one out, Zach Lundquist launched a solo homerun to make the score 5-1. The Rebels added another run later in the inning, and then with the bases loaded, Chase Jessen belted a grand slam to put Sioux Central up 10-1.
The Mustangs fought back with three in the bottom of the 3rd, on RBI’s by Nate Pedersen, Hogan Henrich, and Taylor Hereid. Sioux Central added another in the 4th, as Ben Hargens eventually crossed the plate after getting a leadoff double.
Jessen picked up the win, going 6 2/3 innings, throwing a five-hitter with six strikeouts, and Webber faced the last batter and got a groundout. Jessen and Lundquist were named the Wells Ag Supply of Fonda Players of the Game. They, and Coach Jeff Scharn, talked afterward…
Hereid pitched the final 4 2/3 innings for the Mustangs, striking out four. Newell Fonda finishes at 17-12. Their six seniors include Gerdes, Jacob Carlson, Jesse Haack, Hereid, Cody Voss, and Pedersen.
Sioux Central (16-10) will play Bishop Garrigan Saturday night at 7pm back in Algona in a district final.
