Tuesday’s Class 1A baseball district double-header in Fonda began with Sioux Central avenging last year’s postseason loss to GT-RA with a 6-1 triumph.
The game was a pitchers duel into the bottom of the 5th, when the Rebels plated five runs with two outs. It started with Caleb Rock getting an RBI single off the 1st baseman’s glove to drive home Trace Blomberg. Later in the inning, Caden Webber and Zach Lundquist each had a two-RBI single.
Rock had another RBI single in the 6th. Winning pitcher Jake Hanson threw 5 1/3 innings, giving up only one hit with nine strikeouts, allowing only the one run in the 6th. Webber pitched the final inning and two-thirds, allowing no hits and striking out two. Hanson, along with the Rebels 5th inning burst got credit for the Wells Ag Supply of Fonda Player of the Game.
Sioux Central is now 15-10, ending the Titans year at 5-13. Hanson, Rock, and Coach Jeff Scharn talked afterward…
Sioux Central will play Newell Fonda in a 1A district semifinal in Algona Thursday at 5pm, as the Mustangs defeated North Union in the nightcap 15-5 in five innings.
Newell Fonda scored runs in every inning except the 2nd. Austin Gerdes and Hogan Henrich shared the Wells Ag Supply of Fonda Player of the Game. Gerdes went 4-4 with four RBI’s and three runs scored, while Henrich had two hits, including an RBI triple with three runs scored. The Mustangs racked up 14 hits.
Jesse Haack got the win, pitching all five innings with eight strikeouts. Haack, Henrich, Gerdes, and Coach Bo Darrow all spoke after the game…
Newell Fonda is now 17-11, and the Warriors season is over at 5-18.
