In the season marking the 10th anniversary of Newell Fonda’s state championship in 2008, the Mustangs earned a state softball berth for the 10th time in school history, by shutting out 7th-ranked North Union 10-0 in a Class 1A region final Monday night in Swea City.
The Mustangs struck in the 2nd, as Peyton Wilken tripled home Bailey Sievers for the game’s first run. Two more scored in the 4th on RBI’s by Maggie Walker and Sievers. Newell Fonda added to the lead in the 5th on a two-out two-RBI single by Walker. The Mustangs put the game out of reach with a five-run 7th, including RBI doubles by Ella Larsen and Walker, and the scoring ended with a two-run homer by Ellie Lago.
Ella was masterful in the circle, throwing a three-hitter with six strikeouts, and only one walk. The Warriors had chances early, as they left the bases loaded in the 1st, and then left two on in the 3rd.
Ella, Wilken, Walker, Lago, and Coach Tim Gauley all talked after the game…
Ella, Walker, and Lago were named the Wells Ag Supply of Fonda Players of the Game. North Union’s season is over at 25-5.
Newell Fonda (25-13) is the 8th seed in the 1A state tournament. They will play top-seed Collins Maxwell next Monday, July 16th in a 1st round game in Fort Dodge at 11am.
