The Iowa Legislature this year didn’t extend the one-cent sales tax for school infrastructure beyond 2029, which is causing some concern with the Storm Lake Early Childhood project.
Superintendent Carl Turner Wednesday night told the school board they’re still planning a public vote on the project, but won’t have the sale tax to bond against… meaning the project will have to be funded entirely by property taxes. Turner says the district still has space needs and if they wait on the project it will cost more in the future.
Turner notes the district still has sales tax dollars, and they are being used for some expenses related to the Early Childhood project… including the purchase of land and the architect fees. If the Legislature does extend the sales tax next year, it could then be used to abate property taxes.
