Fund-Raiser Held For Teen Accident Victim

Hundreds of people had dinner Wednesday night at the Storm Lake United Methodist Church… a fundraiser for a Storm Lake teen paralyzed after a car accident last month.

Fourteen-year-old Andrea Rodriguez was ejected from a vehicle February ninth south of Storm Lake. She was paralyzed from the waist down and continues to recover at a Des Moines hospital.

The youth group at the Methodist Church was planning a spaghetti dinner to raise funds for the youth group… but after Andrea’s accident, the middle school and high school youth at the church voted to change the dinner to a fund-raiser to help with her family’s expenses. Andrea is a member of the youth group. Funds will be used to help her family make renovations to their home to accommodate Andrea’s wheelchair, and for other medical expenses.

Once the change in the fund-raiser was made, the youth altered their planning from expecting 300 diners to as many as one-thousand. Much of the ingredients used in the meal were donated, and members of the congregation provided dozens of home-made cakes.
