Mustangs Move On to Semi’s At State

Olivia Larsen scored a game high 28 points and the Newell-Fonda girls basketball team beat Kee-Lansing 61-45 in the first round of the 2018 state tournament.

At one point in the game Larsen scored 15 straight points for the Mustangs who advance to the semi-final’s for the tenth time in 13 state tournament appearances.

Emma Stewart made three 3-pointers and chipped in with 11 points, Megan Morenz scored six points and grabbed 10 rebounds.

The Mustangs, who led 31-28 at halftime, forced Kee into 23 turnovers for the game.

The Hawks were led by Nicki Wood’s 13 points and they finish the year with a record of 22-2.

Newell-Fonda (25-0) will now prepare for a battle of undefeated teams this Friday when they take on Central Decatur.

2nd ranked Central Decatur, improved to 25-0, with a 52-48 win over Montezuma in their first round game.  Friday’s game will tip off at 3:15pm and will be broadcast on 92.9FM KKIA

The other 1A semi-final will start Friday at 1:30pm when Springville takes on Exira-EHK.
