Newell Fonda ended on an 8-0 run inside the final two minutes in their 66-57 win over West Monona in a 1A girls basketball region final in Sac City Monday night.
The Mustangs came out smoking hot, scoring 27 points in the 1st quarter, and leading by as many as 15 during that span. West Monona got within 11 after the opening quarter. Newell Fonda’s shots faltered during the 2nd quarter, when they were held to seven points, and West Monona battled back to take a 35-34 halftime lead.
Newell Fonda scored the first six points of the 3rd quarter, and led the rest of the game. The Mustangs led by as many as 12 during the 2nd half, and were up 56-48 entering the 4th quarter. Back to back free throws pulled the Spartans within 58-57, but from there, Ella Larsen made one of two free throws with 1:54 left to stretch the lead to two. Ella followed with a steal on the other end, and Megan Morenz converted a layup. Soon after that, West Monona missed the front end of a one-and-one, and Maggie Walker connected on a layup. Newell Fonda then came away with another steal, and free throws by Ella and Olivia Larsen capped off the scoring.
Olivia, the Wells Ag Supply of Fonda Player of the Game, scored 15 of her game-high 29 points in the 1st quarter. Morenz had 13, and Walker added 10.

West Monona’s season concludes at 17-7.
#4 Newell Fonda (24-0) moves on to their 13th state tournament in program history. The Class 1A 1st round games at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines will be Wednesday, February 28th. The bracket will not be available until late this Wednesday evening, as two of the 1A region finals got postponed, including Kingsley Pierson vs Bishop Garrigan, which will now be played this Wednesday at BVU.
A Newell Fonda Athletics Boosters potato bar fundraising event for the team’s trip to State will be held at the school on Tuesday, February 27th from 5 to 7:30pm.
