South Central Calhoun Falls in Region Final

The Sioux Center girls basketball team led wire to wire, as they punched their ticket to the state tournament for the third straight year, defeating South Central Calhoun 73-43 in a Class 3A Region Final played Saturday night in Sioux Rapids.

The defending state runner-ups scored the first 13 points of the game, while holding South Central Calhoun scoreless until the 2:14 mark of the 1st quarter.  Sioux Center led 19-4 after the first frame, and went into the halftime break with a 38-24 advantage, although the Titans gained some momentum when Jessica Hicks canned a three-pointer at the buzzer.

South Central Calhoun opened the 3rd quarter on a 9-5 run to cut the deficit to ten points, but could get no closer, as Sioux Center answered with a 24-7 run.

Heidi Hammen led the Titans offensively with 12 points, while Hicks and Maddie Jones each scored eight.  Lexi Toering turned in a game-high 23 points to lead the Warriors.

With the win, Sioux Center improves to 22-2, and advances to the state quarterfinal round at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines, where they will match up against Red Oak (21-2) on Tuesday, February 27th at 5pm.

South Central Calhoun closes at 22-2, and graduates four seniors, including Hicks, Hannah Seil, Mikayla Schultz, and Serena Smith.
