Tornado Boys Knock Off Humboldt

The Storm Lake boys basketball snapped a five-game losing streak Thursday night as the Tornadoes defeated Humboldt 53-45 in the team’s regular season finale.

Trailing 8-6 early on, Storm Lake ended the first quarter on a 6-0 run and never trailed after that. The Tornadoes lead 26-17 at halftime and opened the second half on 12-4 run. Humboldt wouldn’t go away quietly, cutting the difficult to as little as five points at 47-42 with less than three minutes to play but Storm Lake reeled off six consecutive points with less than 90 seconds remaining to separate.

Cham Deng led the victors with 14 points and made all six of his foul shots. Malga Yanga added 10 points and Lamar Mulgae finished with eight. Free throws proved to be key as Storm Lake finished 9/10 at the foul line as a team while Humboldt was just 0/1 on the evening. It was the first time this season that Storm Lake failed to connect on a three-pointer. It was the final home game for the ten Tornado seniors.

With the win, Storm Lake closes the regular season at 11-9 and will visit Spirit Lake in the first round of the Class 3A District tournament on Monday. Tipoff is set for 8:00 pm, the game will be broadcast locally on KKIA 92.9 FM and online at stormlakeradio.com
