The Storm Lake girls basketball team made it a season sweep over Estherville-Lincoln Central with a 56-41 victory Tuesday night in the regular season finale for both teams.
ELC jumped out to a 9-4 lead to start the game before Storm Lake tied the game at 14-14 after one quarter. The Tornadoes took the lead for good midway through the second quarter and led 29-21 at halftime. ELC cut the deficit to as little as one point on three different occasions in the second half but Storm Lake went 5/6 at the free throw line in the final 90 seconds to separate.
Kaylee Oehler, the Wells Ag Supply of Fonda Player of the Game, led all scorers with 14 points, while Ariel and Rachel Bozonie added 11 points each.
Storm Lake improves to 6-15 (3-9 Lakes) and enters the postseason on a 2-game winning streak. The Tornadoes will host Carroll on February 14th for a Class 4A Girls regional quarterfinal. ELC closes the regular season at 1-20 (0-12 Lakes).
In the boys contest ELC defended the home floor, knocking off Storm Lake 37-36 in the Lakes Conference finale for both teams.
The Midgets scored the first seven points of the game and led 14-8 after one quarter. Storm Lake then went on a 10-3 run to take their first lead of the game midway through the second quarter and carried a 22-20 lead into halftime. Storm Lake scored the first six points of the second half and looked primed to pull away before the Midgets scored eight unanswered points to tie the game. Brayden Hoops was fouled with no time remaining in the third quarter and split a pair of free throw attempts to give Storm Lake the lead, 29-28, going into the fourth quarter.
In the fourth quarter, neither team had a lead greater than two points. Storm Lake led 36-34 with 59 seconds remaining in regulation before turning the ball over. On the ensuing possession, ELC freshman Octavius Piercy-Maze was fouled and converted a three-point play, giving ELC a one-point lead with 23 seconds remaining. Storm Lake got a three-point attempt off from the top of the key before the buzzer but it glanced off the front of the rim.
Cham Deng led Storm Lake with 11 points, while Chuol Gatluak, Malga Yanga and Kevin Duque each finished with six. Storm Lake drops to 10-8 (4-8 Lakes) while ELC improves to 11-10 (3-9 Lakes). The Tornadoes will look to snap their 4-game losing skid Thursday when they welcome South Central Calhoun to Tornado Fieldhouse.
