The Sioux County Sheriff’s Office has released the name of an inmate who died last month at the Sioux County Jail.
Twenty-nine year-old Dustin Lee Herbst of Sioux City was found unresponsive in a cell on January 28. Detention officers rendered emergency aid, but rescue efforts were unsuccessful and Herbst was pronounced dead by the Sioux County medical examiner. After conducting an autopsy, the Iowa State Crime Lab ruled Herbst’s death a suicide.
Sheriff Dan Altena said the jail has numerous cameras, which are continually monitored by the corrections staff. The corrections officers also perform physical checks within the entire jail, including the cells. The incident occurred inside one of the cells between the time periods the jail checks were performed by the corrections officer… however, there are no cameras inside the cells.
