Bryce Coppock made a top of the key jumper at the buzzer, capping a 29 point performance to give the Newell Fonda boys basketball team a 75-73 win over Sioux Central on Senior Night in Newell on Tuesday.
The game featured eight lead changes and six ties. Newell Fonda led most of the 1st half. Aden Mahler hit a three at the buzzer to give the Mustangs a 17-12 lead after the 1st quarter. Newell Fonda led by as many as seven during the 2nd quarter, but the Rebels took their first lead late in the 2nd, and led 36-33 at the half.
Sioux Central still led by three going to the 4th. There were five lead changes and five ties in the 4th quarter alone, but the Mustangs made more plays in the closing minutes, ending the game on a 9-2 run, culminating in Coppock’s Wells Ag Supply of Fonda Play of the Game.
Three more Mustangs scored in double figures, including Mahler with 17, RJ Rojas 13, and Jake Davis had 12.
Hunter Dekker poured in 29 for Sioux Central, including seven threes, and Jake Hanson had 24. Ben Hargens also chipped in with 11.
Sioux Central falls to 11-9, and the Rebels boys play one more regular season game on Thursday, as they’ll be hosting Pocahontas Area.

The 1st quarter produced four lead changes and two ties, and Newell Fonda led 16-12. The Mustangs went on a 10-0 run in the 2nd quarter, which gave them a double-digit lead that they would not relinquish.
Olivia Larsen got a share of the Wells Ag Supply of Fonda Player of the Game with 19, with 15 of those coming in the 3rd quarter. Also getting a share was the Mustangs lone senior Jenna Coppock, who had 12 points on four threes, and talked after the game…

The Newell Fonda girls are now 21-0, completing the fifth undefeated regular season in program history, and first since 2000. They will next host a 1A region quarterfinal next Tuesday against either Ar We Va or Paton Churdan.
The Sioux Central girls on Saturday will play in Paulina against South O’Brien in a 2A opening round region match-up.
