St. Mary’s Boys Hold On ; Ridge View Girls Win

The Storm Lake St. Mary’s boys basketball team coughed up a 17 point 3rd quarter lead, but persevered to defeat Ridge View 67-64 on Senior Night at the Panther Pit.

The Panthers ended the 1st half on a 9-2 run to go up 26-17 at the break.  St. Mary’s built a lead as much as 46-29 late in the 3rd, but the Raptors went on a 20-2 run to take their first lead at 49-48 with five minutes left.  St. Mary’s responded with a 6-0 run after that.  Later in the 4th, Ridge View’s Jaxon Franken hit a pair of free throws to tie it at 60-60 with 57 seconds left.  From that point, Will Hurd got a bucket that put the Panthers back up for good, and pushed the lead to 65-60 on free throws by Tanner Snyder and Dawson Miller.

Franken scored with 20 seconds left to cut it to 65-62.  One second later, Alex Merten made both at the line to make it a five point lead again.  With 3.2 seconds left, Franken hit two free throws to make it 67-64.  St. Mary’s threw the ball out of bounds on the inbound attempt giving the Raptors a chance to tie, but a three near the top of the key was off line.

The entire St. Mary’s team shared in the Wells Ag Supply of Fonda Player of the Game.  They were 22 of 29 shooting free throws.  Tanner Snyder had 16 points, six rebounds, and four steals. Will Hurd had 16 points to go along with seven rebounds and eight blocked shots. Dawson Miller added 11 points for the Panthers.  Franken led the Raptors with 28, and Jake Tokheim had 15.

The Ridge View boys are now 5-14, and will next play Friday at Newell Fonda.

The St. Mary’s boys go to 3-16.  The Panthers girls and boys visit West Bend Mallard on Tuesday.

 

Ridge View won the girls contest 65-32.

St. Mary’s took their only lead at 8-7 during the 1st quarter.  After that the Raptors went on a 17-0 run, and took a 38-20 lead at the half.

Beth Pickhinke had 24 to lead all scorers, sharing the Wells Ag Supply of Fonda Player of the Game with Hanna Blackmore, who had 8 off the bench.  Lizzie Lenhart led the Panthers with 17.

The St. Mary’s girls drop to 3-17.  After Tuesday at WBM, the Panthers girls will host Clay Central Everly in a 1A region opener on Thursday night at 7pm, which will be broadcast on 92.9FM KKIA.

Ridge View ends regular season play at 11-8.  The Raptors girls will next venture into postseason play, hosting MVAO-COU in a 2A 1st round game on Saturday night at 7pm, which will be broadcast on 92.9 KKIA.
