Herron Sentenced To Ten Years In Prison

A Quimby man… charged in connection with a crash in 2016 that killed a Sergeant Bluff man… was sentenced Friday to ten years in prison.

Twenty-three year-old Casey Herron was driving a pickup that crashed and rolled over in Cherokee County on July 30th, 2016… killing a passenger, 21-year-old Vitali Zhylka of Sergeant Bluff. Herron and two other passengers received minor injuries. According to court documents, Herron failed field sobriety tests and had a blood-alcohol content of 0.102 percent.

Herron was charged with vehicular homicide, a class “B” felony… and OWI. In December he entered into a plea agreement shortly before his trial was to begin.

Under the agreement, Herron pleaded guilty to a class “C” felony charge of vehicular homicide, with a ten year prison term. He was also ordered to pay 150-thousand dollars in restitution to Zhylka’s estate, and 12-thousand dollars to the Crime Victims Assistance Program.
