Briana Soto delivered the Wells Ag Supply of Fonda play of the game hitting a free throw line jumper with ten seconds left in the game and Storm Lake held on for a thrilling 41-40 win over visiting Spirit Lake Friday night at Tornado Fieldhouse.
Storm Lake trailed 30-25 heading into the 4th quarter and would take the lead 32-30 with five minutes to go. Spirit Lake’s Brooke Harrington made a pair of three pointers in less than a minute and the Indians grabbed a 38-36 lead with 2:15 to go. That’s when Kaylee Oehler made a huge three pointer, her 4th of the game, giving the Tornadoes a 39-38 lead with two minutes to play. Emma Loveall than made a short jumper to put the Indians back on top 40-39 with :40 seconds to go setting up Soto’s game winner.
After Soto hit the go ahead jumper Spirit Lake called time out with nine seconds left in the game, they then dribbled the ball into the front court and called another time out with five seconds left. They would inbound the ball and end up turning it over with one second left. The win for Storm Lake avenges a 32 point loss at Spirit Lake earlier this season.
Oehler led Storm Lake with a game high 13 points, Ariel Bozonie scored 11, and Soto finished with seven.
The Indians were led by Harrington and Emily Alger who scored ten points each.
Spirit Lake falls to 10-9, 5-6 in the Lakes. Storm Lake is now 5-15, and 2-9 in the Lakes. Storm Lake will play their final game of the regular season Tuesday at E-L-C, a team they beat earlier this year in overtime, and then prepare for the 4A tournament when they host Carroll February 14th.
