The Alta Aurelia boys basketball team won a thriller 56-54 in overtime Friday night on senior night in Alta.
Newell Fonda led by as many as ten on five different occasions, and were up 24-16 at halftime. The Mustangs were up by ten points four different times in the 3rd quarter alone, but Alta Aurelia got within 38-32 going into the 4th.
Alex Snyder took over for the Warriors in the 4th quarter, hitting three consecutive threes, the third of those giving Alta Aurelia their first lead of the night at 41-40, and they would never trail again after that.
With 17.3 seconds left in regulation, Tyler Hanks hit back to back free throws to give Alta Aurelia a 48-44 lead. Bryce Coppock followed with a three to close the gap to 48-47. After a foul with 7.2 seconds left, Snyder hit consecutive free throws to make it a three point game again, but Coppock delivered again, knocking down a three at the buzzer, sending it to overtime tied 50-50.
Alta Aurelia was up 54-53 with 14.3 seconds left in the OT, when Hanks again went two for two at the line. The Warriors then committed a foul with 2.7 seconds left, sending Jimmy Becker to the line. Becker made the first, then missed the second on purpose, but Alta Aurelia got the rebound, and Hanks was fouled with 1.1 seconds left. After missing the first free throw, Hanks missed the second intentionally, and the Mustangs weren’t able to get a backcourt heave released in time.
Two of the Warriors seniors, Snyder and Carson Kruger shared the Wells Ag Supply of Fonda Player of the Game. Snyder had 12, all in the 4th quarter and overtime, and Kruger had a game-high 19. Coppock led the Mustangs with 16, nine in the 4th quarter and overtime.
Newell Fonda had their seven game winning streak snapped, and are now 13-6 overall. With the loss, the Mustangs wind up sharing the Twin Lakes Conference title with Pocahontas Area, as they both wound up 9-2 in the TLC.
Alta Aurelia goes to 14-4, finishing 7-4 in the TLC. The Warrior boys play at OA-BCIG Monday.
