The Newell Fonda boys basketball team overcame an early 16-point deficit to defeat Pocahontas Area 59-53 Friday night in Newell.
The Mustangs were still down 32-18 at the half, but went on an 11-0 run to start the 3rd quarter, and eventually tied it up at 33-33. Poky, however closed the 3rd on a 7-0 run to go up 40-33. Newell Fonda fought back again, and took their first lead on a Jimmy Becker three at 50-49, and never trailed after that. A layup by Jake Davis soon after made it a three point lead. A bucket by Cam Callion brought the Indians back within one point, but Bryce Coppock hit consecutive free throws for the Mustangs, and Poky could get no closer for the remainder.
Becker had 11 points, hitting three from downtown, all in the 4th quarter, and shared the Wells Ag Supply of Fonda Player of the Game with Aden Mahler, who had 12, including three triples, including two in a row to start the 2nd half. Coppock had 16, and Davis finished with 17. All seven of the Mustangs threes were in the 2nd half.
Callion had a game-high 20 for the Indians, and Jace Davidson had 10.
Newell Fonda improves to 5-4 overall and 3-1 in the Twin Lakes Conference, dropping Pocahontas Area to 6-3, 3-1.
The #4 in 1A Newell Fonda girls raced out to a 17-0 lead, and carried that to a 70-33 win over Pocahontas Area.
Camryn Wilken had 13 to lead the Mustangs in getting the Wells Ag Supply of Fonda Player of the Game. Jenna Coppock followed with 12, Ella Larsen had 11, and Olivia Larsen contributed 10.
Poky was led by Kaylee Shivers with 8, and Jill Vonnahme had 7.
Newell Fonda pads their record to 10-0, and 4-0 in the TLC. Poky is now 3-6, 2-2.
The Poky teams on Monday host Clarion Goldfield. The Newell Fonda teams next play on Tuesday at home against Fort Dodge St. Edmond.
