Storm Lake Bball Teams Win in Ida Grove

The Storm Lake boys and girls basketball teams both led wire-to-wire
Thursday night en route to a doubleheader sweep over OABCIG in non-conference
In the girls contest, Storm Lake held off a furious Falcon rally to earn a
47-42 victory. The Tornadoes scored the first five points of the game and built
a 15-8 lead after the first quarter. Storm Lake led by as many as 12 points in
the first half and took a 27-17lead into the halftime break. OABCIG held the
Tornadoes to four points in the third quarter and cut the deficit to as little as
three points on two separate occasions. After two Tornado starters fouled out in
the fourth quarter, Sarah Peterson hit her second three-pointer of the contest
with one minute remaining to bring the Falcons within 45-40 but OABCIG wouldn’t
get closer than five points the rest of the way.
Storm Lake went 12/15 at the free throw line and improve to 2-8 overall.
Skylar Cole, the Wells Supply of Fonda Player of the Game, led all scorers with
14 points. Pasha Nyewe had eight and Briana Soto added seven to pace Storm Lake.
The Falcons were led by Beth Rehse’s 13 points, Peterson and Anna Winterrowd each
scored 10. The Falcons were 8/22 at the free throw line and fall to 2-7 on the year.
The win marks Storm Lake’s first ever victory over OABCIG in school history.

In the boys contest, Storm Lake snapped a two game losing streak by defeating the
Falcons 75-44. The two teams found themselves tied 7-7 after four minutes but the
Tornadoes would close the quarter on a 16-5 run. Storm Lake led 46-22 at halftime
and 62-33 after three quarters. The Storm Lake offense, which shared Wells Ag Supply
of Fonda Player of the Game honors, set a new season-high in points and nine
different players scored.
Storm Lake went 6/7 at the free throw line and were led by Malga Yanga’s 19 points.
Cham Deng added 17, Trace Turner had 11 while Lamar Mulgae and Mure Werge each
finished with seven. The Tornadoes improve to 6-2 on the season. OABCIG was 2/5
at the free throw line and were led by Kaden Ladwig’s 13 points. The Falcons fall
to 5-4 on the year.

The Storm Lake teams are off for the holiday break, and will return to action
Thursday, January 4th at Spirit Lake. OABCIG teams will cap off the 2017
position of the schedule Friday, December 22nd at South Central Calhoun
