The Storm Lake St. Mary’s girls basketball team picked up their second win of the year by downing River Valley 51-30 Thursday night at the Panther Pit.
The Wolverines were up most of the 1st quarter, and ended the period with a 9-8 advantage. St. Mary’s quickly erased that deficit and never looked back, building a 23-13 lead at the half. River Valley closed within four during the 3rd quarter, but St. Mary’s got the lead back to ten going to the 4th, and River Valley from there could get no closer than nine.
Abby Jones had 10 points in getting the Wells Ag Supply of Fonda Player of the Game, one of three Panthers in double-figures, as Olivia Schaller had 12, and Lizzie Lenhart led the way with 20. The Panthers made 19 of 27 free throws.
The St. Mary’s girls are now 2-4, dropping River Valley to 0-7. Panthers Coach Derek Varner and Lenhart spoke afterwards…
The St. Mary’s boys were victorious 48-41.
River Valley’s only lead was 2-0. The Panthers led 16-7 after the 1st quarter, 22-15 at the half, and 30-20 after the 3rd. The Wolverines began the 4th quarter on a 10-2 run to close within 32-30, but Jake Heitman followed with a big three, and Heitman later hit another triple to put St. Mary’s up 42-31 with under three minutes left. River Valley could get no closer than six after that.
Heitman and Tanner Snyder each had 11 points, sharing the Wells Ag Supply of Fonda Player of the Game. Alex Merten was next in line with 8.
The Panthers get their first win, now 1-4, as River Valley dips to 1-5. The St. Mary’s teams visit Southeast Valley on Friday.
