Dramatic finishes were the story of the night in the basketball double-header split Thursday night in Sac City between OA-BCIG and East Sac County.
In the girls contest, a Taylor Houska three with 5.3 seconds left, gave East Sac a 40-37 triumph.
OA-BCIG led 18-17 at halftime, but East Sac went ahead in the 3rd quarter on the strength of an 8-0 run, and led by as many as nine in the 4th. The Falcons answered though, scoring ten straight to go up 37-36. Houska then tied it with a free throw. OA-BCIG followed with a turnover, setting the stage for Houska’s Wells Ag Supply of Fonda Play of the Game.
Houska hit six from downtown on the night, and had a game-high 23. Maty Quirk finished with 8 for the Raiders. Anna VanDusen led OA-BCIG with 12. Anna Winterrowd had 10, including 6 in the 4th quarter. Beth Rehse also had 10.
East Sac goes to 3-1, dropping OA-BCIG to 0-4.
In the boys game, OA-BCIG rallied from a 16 point deficit at the start of the 4th quarter to win on a running jumper by Landon Ray with 1.9 seconds to go by a final of 54-53.
East Sac led 29-25 at halftime, and closed the 3rd quarter on a 7-0 spurt to take what was their biggest lead at 47-31.
Pressure defense and three-point shooting by OA-BCIG proved the key in the last few minutes, as back to back threes by Kaden Ladwig capped a 10-0 run, and brought the Falcons within 48-46 with a little over a minute remaining. After a Raiders free throw, Ray sank a three to tie it at 49-49 with one minute left. A basket by Camden Schroeder put East Sac back on top, but Ty Warnke sank a three with 28.5 seconds left to give the Falcons a 52-51 advantage. Connor Crabb made a shot to regain the lead for the Raiders with 15.1 seconds to go, before Ray’s Wells Ag Supply of Fonda Play of the Game.
Ladwig led all scorers with 19, and was followed in the Falcons scorebook by Warnke and Austin Newquist with 9 each.
Brandyn Clair had 15 to lead the Raiders, followed by Crabb with 11.
OA-BCIG is now 2-2. The Falcons teams Friday night host West Monona.
East Sac falls to 2-1. The Raiders teams Friday will visit Newell Fonda.
