The Newell Fonda girls basketball team kept their perfect start intact, as the 8th-ranked Mustangs pulled away in the 2nd half to defeat Pocahontas Area 75-47 Tuesday night in Pocahontas.
The 1st half produced seven lead-changes and three ties, as the Mustangs led 26-24 at the half. An 11-0 run during the 3rd quarter helped put Newell Fonda firmly in control for the remainder.
Olivia Larsen led the Mustangs with 17. Ella Larsen followed with 16, and Megan Morenz had 11. Ella, and another freshman Bailey Sievers with 8 off the bench, combined for the Wells Ag Supply of Fonda Player of the Game, as Newell Fonda is now 4-0.
The Indians were led by Delaney Ehn and Elizabeth Ricke each with 12, and Leah Aljets had 11. Poky is now 2-2.
In the boys game, Pocahontas Area was never behind, as they won 74-52.
The Indians were up 37-30 at halftime, and went on a 9-2 run to start the 3rd quarter, and held a double-digit lead the rest of the way. Newell Fonda could only get as close as ten after that.
Jace Davison, the Wells Ag Supply of Fonda Player of the Game, paced the Indians with 21. Cam Callion had 14, and Nathan Aljets and Braden Ehn both with 12. Poky is now 2-1.
Bryce Coppock had 21 for the Mustangs, followed by Aden Mahler with 13. Newell Fonda is now 0-3.
The Newell Fonda teams on Friday will host East Sac, while the Poky teams on Friday are at Alta Aurelia.
