It wasn’t easy, but the Newell Fonda girls basketball team improved to 3-0 with a 58-52 win over Sioux Central Friday night in Sioux Rapids.
Sioux Central trailed only briefly on two occasions in the 1st half, up 20-19 after the 1st quarter, and 30-29 at halftime.
Newell Fonda went up 42-40 late in the 3rd quarter and never trailed after that, riding a 7-0 run to end the 3rd to take a 45-40 lead.
The Rebels continued to hang tough though, getting within 53-52 in the late stages, but an Olivia Larsen basket started a 5-0 run to finish the game.
Olivia led the Mustangs with 24, followed by Megan Morenz with 16.

Dani Boettcher delivered a game-high 27 for Sioux Central, including 20 in the 1st half. Shera Smith was next in line with 17, as the Rebels drop to 1-3.
Sioux Central was never behind in the boys game, winning it 69-51.
The Rebels were up 16-14 to end the 1st quarter, and 36-27 at half. Newell Fonda got as close as four during the 3rd quarter, but Sioux Central bounced back to lead 50-41 after the 3rd, and put the game out of reach by finishing with a 12-2 run.
Hunter Decker led the Rebels with 24, followed by Chase Jessen with 17.
Bryce Coppock had a game-high 29 for the Mustangs.
Sioux Central is now 1-1. The Rebels teams will host Spencer on Saturday.
