South Dakota freshmen Kody Case, Tyler Ciurej, Mason Scheidegger, Nathan Schultz and Brady Schutt have all been named to the Missouri Valley Football Conference All-Newcomer Team announced Tuesday. The five selections are the most for USD in six seasons in the Valley. No other MVFC team has more than three selected to the 22-man team.
Case (Lake City, Iowa) has caught 21 passes for 368 yards and four touchdowns while competing in 11 games for the Coyotes. He is the team’s fourth-leading receiver in terms of yardage, and his four scores are tied for second. In addition, Case has averaged 9.1 yards on 15 punt returns and 17.1 yards on 10 kickoff returns.
Ciurej (Bellevue, Nebraska) has competed in all 12 games and has been the starting center for nine in a row. Scheidegger (Fonda, Iowa) has played every position on the offensive line this season and started all 12 games. They have been instrumental in helping the Coyotes rank second nationally in total offense and fifth nationally for scoring. USD ranks 25th nationally in rushing at 196 yards per game and eighth in passing at 317 yards per game.
Schultz (Hartland, Wisconsin) has earned 11 starts at defensive tackle where he has compiled 23 tackles including 5.0 sacks and 8.0 tackles-for-loss. Schultz ranks second on the team for sacks and third for TFL. He has aided an improved run defense that is allowing 146 yards per game, a 100-yard improvement from a season ago.
Schutt (Orange City, Iowa) has filled in admirably for departed All-American Miles Bergner. Schutt leads the Valley with 24 punts placed inside the 20, while seven have been downed inside the 10. He has averaged 40.2 yards on 58 punts and has a long of 54 yards.
Of the honorees, Case, Ciurej and Schultz are true freshmen while Scheidegger and Schutt are redshirt freshmen.
