The Sioux City-North Stars were in Storm Lake Tuesday night for a non-conference double-header and the Tornadoes gave the hometown fans a lot to cheer for as they pulled off a double-header sweep.
The Storm Lake girls started the night with a 49-48 win holding off a Stars team that trailed by 15 points with under 3:40 to play. Nyathal Deng scored a career high 16 points for the Tornadoes, Kaylee Oehler added ten and Rachel Bozonie had nine. The Tornadoes never trailed in the game as they won their first game of the season. The victory is also the Tornadoes first ever against a 5A school and it was the first time they won a game in November since 2009.
The Storm Lake boys scored 24 first quarter points to build an early lead and they never looked back winning 65-57. The Green and White led 36-27 at the break and North would never get closer than four points in the 2nd half.
Malga Yanga scored a team high 18 points and Brayden Hoops added ten. The Tornado bench out-scored North’s 24-8 and Storm Lake made 24 of 38 free throws, while North connected on only 10 of 26.
The Storm Lake teams will now play at Denison-Schleswig Thursday night, the games will be broadcast on Mix 101.7FM KAYL starting at 6pm.
