Taylor Houska’s buzzer-beating three gave the East Sac girls a 62-60 win at Storm Lake in both team’s season opener Friday night.
There were seven lead changes and six ties in the 1st half, and East Sac led 23-19 at the break. On the strength of a 14-0 run, East Sac built a 46-36 advantage early in the 4th quarter, and shortly thereafter stretched it to as many as 12.
East Sac led 56-46 with 2:56 to go. The Tornadoes then scored eight straight on threes by Briana Soto and Ariel Bozonie, and two free-throws by Kaylee Oehler. Storm Lake gained possession down 59-58, and called timeout with 21.6 seconds remaining. Nya Deng scored with ten seconds left to give Storm Lake the lead before Houska’s game-winning heroics.
Houska’s Wells Ag Supply of Fonda Play of the Game shot at the end capped off a game-high 20 point effort. Deng led four Tornadoes in double-figures with 15.
Storm Lake will be part of their own Jamboree on Saturday, taking on Sioux Central at 8pm.
East Sac will next play at Siouxland Christian on November 27th.
