A Spencer woman who had been driving a vehicle naked and got out of it while she was still naked and walked through traffic on Grand Avenue Wednesday was arrested on multiple charges.
Police say they responded to the 200 block of Grand Avenue shortly after 5:30 pm and found the woman, 36-year-old Heidi Bern of Spencer, walking naked in traffic. Officers escorted her from the roadway and suspected she was under the influence of a controlled substance. They summoned paramedics to the scene, but at that point they say Bern became combative and irrational. They then restrained her in handcuffs. Bern was taken to Spencer Hospital where she was treated and released.
Upon further investigation, officers determined Bern had allegedly been driving a 2002 Hyundai when she got out of the vehicle while it was still in motion. The car came to rest on a sidewalk in the 200 block of Grand Avenue with no apparent damage. No pedestrians were hurt in the incident.
Bern was booked into the Clay county jail on charges of possession of a controlled substance…methamphetamine, interference with official acts, disorderly conduct, and reckless driving. Authorities say an additional charge of operating a motor vehicle while under the influence is pending the results of laboratory tests.
