The Storm Lake Fire Department was called to a machine shed fire Sunday morning at 5663 160th Avenue, northeast of Storm Lake.
Fire fighters entered the shed and extinguished a smoldering fire on the floor of the building. Fire chief Mike Jones says an investigation determined a fire started in the cab of a John Deere model 4640 tractor. It’s believed the fire burned all night, in the closed building, before being discovered. The fire apparently consumed all of the available oxygen in the building which prevented it from spreading and consuming the entire building.
The tractor was totally destroyed in the fire. Damage to the building and tractor is estimated at 45-thousand dollars. The property is owned by Greg and Rhonda Burnside.
The fire department was on scene for about one hour, and was assisted by the Buena Vista County Sheriff’s Department.
