In a back and forth contest filled with big plays the Audubon football team scored the final 25 points over the last thirteen minutes of the game and beat Newell-Fonda 45-33 in a first round game of the eight-player playoffs in a game played at Audubon.
Audubon quarterback Tyler Riebhoff ran for three touchdowns and passed for another leading the Wheelers offensive attack that totaled 428 yards including 344 on the ground.
Audubon’s 13-12 lead at the half was short lived as Austin Gerdes returned the 2nd half kickoff 79 yards for a touchdown and minutes later Bryce Coppock connected with Nate Pederson on a 66 yard touchdown pass and the Mustangs led 25-13 with eight minutes to go in the third quarter. After Audubon answered with a 65 yard touchdown drive the Mustangs would strike again when Gerdes ripped off a 57 yard touchdown run, Coppock would then run in the two point conversion and Newell-Fonda built their biggest lead of the game at 33-20 with 3:10 remaining in the 3rd quarter.
Audubon answered on their next drive scoring a touchdown with under a minute to play in the third quarter and then converted the two point play to make the score 33-28. With under five minutes to play in the game the Wheelers would kick a 33 yard field goal to pull within 33-31. The Mustangs then committed their 2nd turnover of the game giving Audubon the ball at the Newell-Fonda 33 yard line. Riebhoff would run the ball the next three plays with the end result a touchdown, he would then throw a pass for the two-point conversion to make the score 39-33.
The Mustangs would start the ensuing drive at their own 15 yard line with 1:54 to go, Coppock was sacked on first down and three incompletions later the Wheelers had the ball back at the Mustang nine yard line and Riebhoff would later ice the game with a five yard touchdown run.
The Mustangs had 236 yards of offense with Gerdes leading the way on the ground gaining 117 yards on 12 carries and was named the Wells Ag Supply of Fonda player of the game.
Audubon had 17 first downs compared to the Mustangs six. Newell-Fonda committed the only two turnovers of the game.
Only two penalties were accepted in the game and both were against Newell-Fonda.
The Mustangs conclude the year with a record of 8-2, while the Wheelers are now 10-0 and will host Remsen-St. Mary’s in the quarter-finals.
