A few changes are being made to the Storm Lake Schools teacher leadership plan as it enters its second year.
Ben Schekirke… the curriculum and professional development leader… says they’re following a student-centered approach, with six full-time instructional coaches assigned to first and second year teachers, along with helping more experienced teachers as needed. Three of the teacher coaches serve the whole district, with one each is assigned to the elementary, middle, and high schools.
The district also has 32 lead teachers, who serve as mentors to new teachers and help develop classroom plans. Superintendent Carl Turner says the leadership plan is off to the better start this year… getting more training to teachers. The district receives about 700-thousand dollars from the state for the program.
