Playing in front of a large crowd for their 7th annual Spike Out Cancer event the Storm Lake volleyball team defeated Spirit Lake 25-21, 16-25, 26-24, 25-23 Tuesday night. It’s the Tornadoes first conference match win in five years and the first time they beat Spirit Lake since 2010.
Coach Kim Johnson told Storm Lake Radio “what a great team effort both offensively and defensively. I’m so proud of the girls. This was a dog fight all night and it was so exciting. Our serve receive tonight was awesome and that made a huge difference. The girls were so scrappy and went for every ball. They never gave up and played consistently all night.
Tonight was also senior night. Eight seniors played their last home match and they set a goal at the beginning of the season to win a conference match. I reminded them of that goal before we started and they were up for the challenge. Jenna, Hannah, Kaylee, Ariel, Danielle, Nyathal, Rebecca, and our manager, Chloe are the seniors. They are such a great group and them along with the other varsity players have such good team chemistry. They are friends on and off the court. I’m so happy for the girls and am anxious to see what the rest of the season brings.
We have improved tremendously as the season has progressed. Following every match, I told the girls that the goal was to get better with every match and to peak at the end of the season. Well, tonight was our best match of the year. Now we have our tourney on Saturday and the first round of regionals next Wednesday.
