Manny Chavez ran for three touchdowns and Storm Lake gained 281 yards of offense in the first half during the Tornadoes 41-19 win over Spirit Lake in a game played Saturday afternoon in Storm Lake.
The Tornadoes ran the ball 65 times in the game for 300 yards and quarterback Kevin Duque completed 4-of-7 passes for 97 yards. Chavez scored first half touchdowns on runs of one, five, and six yards. Kole Wiegert added a one yard touchdown run just before the end of the half and Storm Lake led 28-0 at the end of the first two quarters.
Spirit Lake would score a pair of third quarter touchdowns but missed on both two-point conversions and it was a 28-12 game going into the 4th quarter. Brayden Hoops would cap off a 55 yard drive early in the 4th scoring from a yard out, his 16th rushing touchdown of the year, and it was 35-12 with under 11 minutes to play.
Nicholas Christensen threw his third T-D pass of the game, all to Frankie Ramos, and the score was 35-19 with eight minutes to go. Storm Lake would then march 58 yards in 5:15 with Lamar Mulgae running it in from one yard out for the final score of the game.
Mulgae carried the ball 16 times for 116 yards, Chavez had 11 carries for 59, Duque finished with 12 carries for 66 yards, and Hoops toted the ball 19 times for 40.
The Tornadoes had 397 yards of offense compared to Spirit Lake’s 284. The Indians had only 81 yards of offense in the first half.
Storm Lake is now 6-1 overall and alone in 2nd place in the district with a 4-1 mark. The Green and White will host Spencer Friday at 7pm. Spirit Lake falls to 5-2 overall and 3-2 in the district.
