Pocahontas Man Jailed After Stand-Off

A Pocahontas man was jailed after a stand-off with local authorities.
According to the Pocahontas County Sheriff’s Office, last Saturday night law enforcement was dispatched to 105 2nd Avenue SW in Pocahontas for a domestic disturbance involving a suicidal male. Upon arrival, it was learned that 51-year-old John Alan Mell had armed himself with a knife and a rifle, and barricaded himself inside the house. After an hour and 15-minutes of trying to resolve the situation, a TASER unit was utilized to subdue Mell and take him into custody.
Mell was initially transported to Pocahontas Hospital for an evaluation. Mell was charged with interference with official acts involving a firearm, a class D felony…assault while displaying a dangerous weapon, an aggravated misdemeanor…disorderly conduct, a simple misdemeanor…and domestic abuse assault, a simple misdemeanor.
Mell was booked into the Pocahontas County Jail on a five-thousand dollar bond. Assisting at the scene were the Pocahontas Police Department, the Fonda Police Department, the Laurens Police Department, the Pocahontas County Sheriff’s Office, and the Pocahontas Ambulance.
