From coach Jodi Mongan…..”The Tornado swimmers had another successful day at the Des Moines North Lonny Kerman Invitational on Saturday, September 23. This is the fourth year in a row that the team has won the meet. Storm Lake finished with 308 points, followed by Algona with 197, Perry with 180, then Oskaloosa at 163 points, Des Moines Hoover with 111 points and finally host Des Moines North with 102 points.
In Junior Varsity scoring the Tornadoes also were first out of the 4 teams that had JV swimmers. Storm Lake’s JV swims earned them 339 points, Algona had 205, Oskaloosa was at 64 and Hoover had 15 JV points.
The team won all but 2 of the varsity races during the meet as well as all 9 of the JV events that had swimmers. Seniors Kylie Mongan and Grace Meier led the way by winning both of their individual events for the day. Kylie won the 50 yd freestyle, in an exciting race, with a time of :27.36 and the 100yd freestyle in :59.52. Grace Meier had no trouble winning her first event the 200yd Individual Medley(I.M.) with a time of 2:27.14 and in the 100yd butterfly she took first in 1:09.18. Other individual firsts in varsity events included, JR Alli Graff in the 200yd freestyle with a 2:20.56 swim and SR Lindsay Williams in the 100yd backstroke in a personal best 1:09.33 time. The Tornadoes won all three varsity relays. In the 200yd Medley Relay it was Lindsay Williams, Sami Lalone, Megan Brown and Brooklyn Wissbaum that won in 2:07.11. In the 200yd Freestyle Relay Megan Brown, Alli Graff, Grace Meier and Kylie Mongan teamed up for the win in 1:52.4 and in the 400yd Freestyle Relay Graff, Meier and Mongan were joined by Kennedy Tate for the win in 4:09.87.
Other top finishes in varsity action were Vivian Keenan’s 2nd place finish in the 200yd freestyle with a time of 2:22.41 and she was also 3rd in the 100yd freestyle in 1:05.85. Kennedy Tate was 2nd in both the 200yd I.M. and the 100yd backstroke in 2:40.47 and 1:11.67 respectively. Megan Brown was 3rd in a great 100yd butterfly swim for a time of 1:13.01. Two more 2nd place finishes rounded out the days varsity results. Alli Graff was 2nd in the 500yd freestyle in 6:27.33 and Sami Lalone was 2nd in the 100yd breaststroke in 1:18.62.
The JV event results in order. The team of Emma Jensen, Mercedes Juelfs, Chloe Lalone and Isabel Gebers won the JV 200yd Medley Relay event. Beth Runneberg won the JV 200yd freestyle in 2:26.91. Ellie Scully won the JV 200yd I.M.. Storm Lake had the top 7 finishers in the JV 50 free. Lindsay Williams was 1st, Brooklyn Wissbaum was 2nd and Emma Jensen was 3rd. Beth Runneberg was 1st and Sami Lalone was 2nd in the JV 100yd freestyle. Brooklyn Wissbaum was 1st in the JV 500yd freestyle in her first swim of this event. In the JV 200yd Freestyle Relay Storm Lake went 1st, 2nd and 3rd of 6 teams. The team of Vivian Keenan, Kennedy Tate, Ellie Scully and Brooklyn Wissbaum were 1st. Sami Lalone, Jaylyn Vandervort, Beth Runneberg and Isabel Gebers were 2nd and Anahi Garcia, Alejandra Rodriguez, Chloe Lalone and Mercedes Juelfs were 3rd. In the JV 100yd breaststroke Ellie Scully was 1st and Isabel Gebers was 2nd. Finally, in the JV 400yd Freestyle Relay it was Emma Jensen, Vivian Keenan, Lindsay Williams and Beth Runneberg that took 1st place”.
